This training will break down for you the time-lines required for behavior reports, who is involved, and how to read and understand a behavior report. Learn how the IPP is tied to the behavior plan, what the goals are, and how you can be a part of implementing the plan. In this informative and provocative session, Dr. Pomeranz decisively dispels the myth “they are children in adult bodies.”  The implications of developmental age, mental age and mind of a three year old will be thoroughly explored.  Attendees will be introduced to a variety of age-appropriate training and leisure materials that are desired by individuals with developmental disabilities.  The argument that an age-appropriate lifestyle and opportunity for choice only apply to individuals with mild cognitive limitations or those who are verbal will be debunked. Emphasis will be placed on the maxim “It’s not what people have, it’s what they don’t.”  Through the sharing of tales, attendees will increase their sensitivity to adults with developmental disabilities utilizing age-appropriate media and behaviors.  Deviancy-competency hypothesis will be discussed as to its importance in encouraging adults with developmental disabilities to select age-appropriate items.

12/05/23  SPI - Universal Enhancements – Raising the Bar

Tom provides attendees with the strategies that can be used in supporting people in possessing and experiencing "things" of value in their lives: hobbies, employment, education, religion and leisure pursuits all promote a quality life. Through Universal Enhancement applies to us all, outsiders and people who are the targets of prejudice serve as the primary subjects of the Universal Enhancement discussion. One's intellectual disability, physical disability, psychiatric disability, race or national origin frequently result in being devalued or challenged by society's myths and prejudices. When placed in the right hands the tools of Universal Enhancement will overcome the combined forces of ignorance, arrogance, prejudice and fear which steal the lives of its victims.
